Detailed Naruto Fanfic Recs
|
I love good fiction, and I love Naruto, so the fact that I'm creating a list of the best Naruto fanfiction I've read is simply inevitable. I fully expect this list to grow with time as I read more of what is out there, so I plan to save this entry in my memories for others to see. I will update as I find new material. With time, it should grow larger. For fic that has moved me in some way, look behind the cut. Warning: I do have a penchant for tragedy, so most will be dark or angsty. However, there are some great humorous ones interspersed among them.

Detailed Naruto Fanfic Recs, Part II
|
Updated February 02, 2007
The length of my updated recs exceeded the posting capacity of the first Naruto Rec List. This one is set up similarly, except for a special part at the end called The Shisui Section, dedicated to well-written fics about this mysterious character.

Holy shite

A freeway bridge a few blocks from my house just collapsed into the river. During rush hour traffic.
Glad I didn't go to the Twins game tonight.

I've had an epiphany
|
I know what I'm going to do with the rest of my life.
I'm still rolling reeling with shock about how long it took me to realize that I am destined to earn a Ph.D. in English. Over the past six months, I discovered that the world is suffering from my lack of intellectual contributions. I can feel the stagnation: how can society truly flourish without my modern social criticism of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales?
Okay, so maybe this plays out on more of a personal level. I miss school. My brain has slowly been atrophying from mediocrity of administrative work. I surely can do without deadlines but where is the intellectual stimulation? The books? The challenge of arguing with my contemporaries?
So I graduated a political science major (minor in philosophy woot!) That just gives me more of a background to be able to interpret stories within a broader context. I think I honestly have a chance of getting into grad school, too. I'm Phi Beta Kappa, scored in the 91st percentile on the English portion of the GRE, my English/philosophy criticism paper is being published, I wrote a novel as part of my undergraduate honors project, and my favorite English professor (who loves me) graduated from the school I want to apply for and still has contacts there.
I die now.
So come on, everyone. As much as I love books, I'm not half as well-read as the majority of people on here. I NEED YER HELP. Rec me books, good books, great books, ANY BOOKS, books with good reputations, books with bad reputations. A few reasons why you like them would be appreciated. I simply must have a decent have-read list that I can send in with my application. Four months to buckle down with literary works of genius. I R EXCITED. ME WANT STORIES NOM NOM NOM.
ETA: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, sharingank!!1! (DeiTobi toothbrush ... DeiTobi toothbrush ... DeiTobi toothbrush ... *brain 'splodes* I'm trying. :D)

It is clear to me now that the lj staff isn't comprised of philosophers....
|
because their love of overgeneralization and vagueness would get them shot in any philosophy classroom. Figuratively, of course. Or perhaps I should say IN WRITING THIS, I DO NOT ACTUALLY WISH HARM ON LJ STAFFERS.
That isn't good enough anymore, apparently. Disclaimers count for very little, and LJ has gone beyond taking listed interests into consideration; they are now evaluating actual content of journals (when reported to them).
The litmus test for deciding to delete journals is now determined by the intent of the blogger. This is after getting their virtual asses handed to them on a silver platter when they declared that LJ standards would be based on US law. Should have consulted lawyers, guys, instead of attempting to make policy based on something you don't understand. If my one course in Constitutional Law gives me enough background to be able to see the holes in your argument, you're in trouble. If the Miller Test and obscenity laws can allow Lolita and Hustler and anything by George R.R. Martin, it's going to allow fanfic involving sex between 12-year-olds.
After having been pwned in that area, they have since "clarified" their position on the matter. From the horse's mouth:
"An example of some of the questions we'll ask in order to determine if material falls into this category are: is this writing intended to eroticize the sexual abuse of children? Is the fact that someone's underage, a critical element of the work, or is it incidental? Is the language excessively graphic instead of suggestive? Is there context beyond the sexual situation, or is the material designed just to focus on the sexualization of minors and nothing more? Does the work have an overall message, or is it written only to appeal to an adult's potential sexual fascination with children? These are only some of the questions we'll ask, and we have to consider everything that's reported to us in context and as a whole."
The whole article can be found here. Herein we find the logical fallacy of basing something off of someone's intentions: just how in the hell are you going to determine that? Do you have access to the thoughts and feelings of the blogger? Are you going to enjoin English professors across the world to ascertain whether certain fanfics have a "message?" Indeed, what does suggestive versus graphic language have to do with anything?
I've kept quiet on the matter up until now. But really, there's only so much stupidity a person can take before deciding to go over to Greatest Journal. This is my threshold. I'll still be on lj (for as long as I'm allowed, heh) but I've decided to make simultaneous posts elsewhere as a backup.
I've always had an uneasy relationship with my fanfiction. Sometimes I don't know what to think of it myself. Regardless, seeing as how writing sex between 12-year-olds is now banned, well... I'm sure to go up in flames if reported by the thought police.
How long will it take the lj staff to go from investigating the posts reported to them by others, to actively trolling the site for objectionable content themselves?

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (CON REPORT)

I would like to begin this con post by expressing my overall joy with the way things turned out. But since the traveling portion of my trip was a living nightmare, I must first mention that HITTING A BLACK BEAR GOING TO ANIME NORTH WAS TEN TIMES BETTER THAN FLYING.

Okay, yes it is. Feel better, Alex!

( Picture heavy cut )
Did y'all know Itachi has a theme song? Well, he does. At least, that's what someone told me on a recent chuunin thread. One day she was looking on limewire and saw that someone had uploaded a song that dripped "Uchiha clan killer." Since I thought it was SO ITACHI, I'm including it here for everyone else to enjoy. It's hard to speak with your tongue firmly in cheek. ACTUALLY, I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT. o__o
In other news, shiiniigamii wrote a fantastic story about Itachi and Shisui. It's not everyday that you can find a good first-person Itachi POV fic.

Major Journal Restructuring
|
Hey folks.
This will no longer be where I post fanfic. For that, I created a new journal delphic_sybil, which you'll need to friend to read. I also did a large friends cut, mostly of people who've added me just for the fanfic. I figured there was no need to keep harassing you guys with unrelated, personal posts. ^__^ If you've been cut, but for some reason want to keep reading about moi, comment here. If you have not been cut and actually want to drop this one, feel free to defriend.
♥ Love you all.

Itachi and Kisame Rockin' it Gangsta Style (AMV)
|
These two would make a killing in the rap industry. Literally. They got bling, attitude, and a penchant for murder.
So I hooked them up. The result is this hilarity. It is completely in keeping with my make-merciless-fun-of-Itachi philosophy.
I made the video because this post inspired me silly. I thought of you, erisabesu, while making it. I might not be able to get to your Kabuto story for a while, so I hope you enjoy this in the meantime.
You have to be a member at http://www.animemusicvideos.org to download, but membership is free. All you have to do is sign up. If anyone wants me to send the video via a filesharing program, e-mail me at oracle_bacchus@yahoo.com
FEEDBACK WOULD BE LOVE. ♥

Minor flist cut
|
Made a minor flist cut today. I'm defriending if your journal is inactive, you're out of fandom, or I just can't remember why we friended each other. I'm keeping those who expressed interest in my fanfic, though, even if we never talk. If for some odd reason anyone cut wants to stay on, let me know.

ZOMG SHISUI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Can't ... type ... brain ... melting. Okay, if my brain hadn't already been reduced to mush from just finishing my last final ever in my life FIVE SECONDS AGO, it would have melted upon seeing Shisui. You all remember how unhappy the boy was at the end of “Tainted Red,” right? Well, the illustrious shiiniigamii made a minicomic about it and I am ded, DED of squee.
DO YOU ALL ENJOY REDUCING ME TO A PILE OF GOO ON PURPOSE?

Wee! First inspired artwork

This adorable Itachi picture was drawn by fukkafyla after she read "Firefly, Light My Way." (Click on pic for a larger image.) Note the slightly embarrassed look on his face. Note my resulting happiness. I love embarrassing Itachi. And yes, I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record. Shush.
Thank you so much fukkafyla! ♥ ♥ ♥ You made my day.
